The trial of Javonte D. Sanders begins today, Monday, January 29, 2018.

Sanders, 26, from Shreveport, is charged with second-degree murder, for the brutal slaying of Sherri Ann Payton, who was 47 at the time of her death, in 2010.

According to the Caddo District Attorney’s office, in November of 2010, Sanders murdered Payton in her Lynbrook Boulevard home, which was in the Hyde Park neighborhood. After the murder, Sanders allegedly stole Payton’s Pontiac Grand Am, which was later discovered in a nearby apartment complex.

The DA’s office says that the case remained cold for several years, but three years after Payton’s death, detectives received a tip, which led to the discovery of evidence which placed Sanders at the scene of the crime.

If found guilty, Sanders faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility or parole, probation, or reduction of sentence.
