The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office has begun a drunk driver enforcement campaign that will last the length of this holiday season, running from December 13th through January 1st. Officers from the Sheriff’s Office will be conducting additional patrols in hopes of catching drivers who are under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Funding for the new initiatives comes from a grant provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission called “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” The grant provides CPSO will 153 hours of funding devoted solely to impaired driving enforcement.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, “Almost 29 people in the United States die in alcohol-impaired vehicle crashes– that’s one person every 50 minutes in 2016. Drunk-driving fatalities have fallen by a third in the last three decades; however, drunk-driving crashes claim more than 10,000 lives per year.”
Prator also used the opportunity to explain the dangers of impaired driving on the latest episode of his web series “Straight Shootin'”.
While Prator hopes that by bringing attention to the issue people will avoid driving drunk this holiday season, the Sheriff warns “if you’re over the limit and you drive, you’re under arrest.”
